Review: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

You may think you know what The Rocky Horror Picture Show is, but until you have experienced it yourself, you have no idea, darling. As a Rocky Horror virgin myself (gasp), I was blown (lol) away by this year’s production by the St Andrews Musical Theatre Society.

After a hilarious pre-show introduction by publicists Jazmin Graham and Tash McQuire, the show starts strong from the curtain-up. Many of the performers are incredibly talented dancers, particularly Adam Mercer as Eddie/Usher, Calia Reilly as Columbia, and of course Rebeca Ravara as Frank. There are also excellent, captivating performances by Lewis Fitez as Magenta, Lucile Belorgey as Riff Raff, and Henry Huron as Rocky.

As we all know, though, no singular performer can save a disjointed cast, and this one is very much the opposite. The ensemble communicates with the performance dynamically, constantly maintaining the audience's attention, and the entire cast has a refined sense of physical comedy. The spectacular effect of the show is in no small part thanks to choreographer Helena Rothery, who creates mesmerising images onstage. A special mention is also owed to costumers Alex Chun and Elouisa Cairns, for their ability to enhance the magic of the show with their gorgeous (and at times uproarious) costumes.

Now that I have been Rocky Horror deflowered, I can only recommend the experience. If you know and love the cult classic, this production will certainly scratch that very particular itch. If you think you know it, and wonder if you may grow (wink wink) to love it too — you actually can’t buy a ticket because it is sold out. You can, however, beg someone for one. It will be worth it. I swear.
