A long time ago – before written record – in March 2020, the Gay Saint Blog came into existence. For a short period there appeared on it various fun articles, and after that period no more. Who now can speculate at the motives of our distant ancestors? Regardless, by 2023 (the Heroic Age) my glorious predecessor Lina had come across the lost ruins of the Blog, and dedicated their powers to resurrecting it.
In September of that year the Big Gay Blog entered into all our lives, with a mighty new vision: uplifting and fun articles in an informal personal style directly expressing the queer experience in St Andrews. Spearheaded by original erin’s music articles, it expanded into life advice, discussions of all sorts of media, and the foreign territory of student theatre reviews. Tragically Lina soon graduated and I took over. 2024-2025 brought a new website, new writers and readers, and a continuation of the variety and individuality that makes the blog great (and an awful lot of theatre reviews).
This year things are changing again: we’re still on the same website, but we have now opened up absolute freedom to our writers to create anything in any style, non-fiction up to fiction and poetry, and everything inbetween (though you’ll still see a lot of good old blog-style stuff). We’re also officially opening up individual article submissions for anyone who wants to contribute something but not dedicate themself to writing regular articles – a form for that will open when general team applications close on Friday 26th.
This year will bring you all more of everything good we do, but with tighter systems and more opportunity for our contributors to experiment with style and form, to develop as writers, and to freely express themselves (which is the only point of all this anyway). There is an infinite variety of student magazines here in St Andrews, but none of them have the good vibes of the Big Gay Blog. This is a place for anyone queer to write without pressure about anything they’re interested in, in any way they like, and we still have the best writing in town.
To a slay year ahead and many more to come!
